Do I need to have had a traumatic birth?

No.The Birth is open to anyone who has given birth. You do not need to describe your experience as traumatic for it to have had a lasting impact.Some people come because their birth was very difficult. Others come because it was positive but still left questions, emotions or memories they would like to explore.Every birth has a story worth telling.

How long after giving birth can I come?

Whenever it feels right for you.You may be weeks, months or many years after giving birth. There is no time limit on making sense of an experience that has stayed with you.

What if I’m not sure The Birth is right for me?

That’s completely understandable.Every birth story is unique, and finding the right person to share it with matters. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to explore before reaching out, and you don’t need to have the “right” words.An initial conversation gives us the opportunity to talk about what has brought you to The Birth, answer any questions you may have, and get a sense of whether this feels like the right space for you.Because this work is deeply personal, the relationship between us matters. It’s important that you feel comfortable, heard and safe with the person you choose to explore your story with.There is no pressure to book. Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation.

What happens in the three sessions?

Session One – Before the BirthWe explore the story before labour began: your expectations, beliefs, hopes, fears and the experiences that shaped how you approached birth.Session Two – The BirthThis is a space to tell your birth story in whatever way feels right for you. We may work through conversation, metaphor, writing or creative reflection, always at your pace.Session Three – After the BirthTogether we reflect on how the experience has shaped you, what you may still be carrying, and how your birth story fits into the wider story of your life.

What is Dramatherapy?

Dramatherapy is a creative form of psychotherapy.It offers different ways of exploring experiences that can sometimes feel difficult to put into words. Alongside conversation, we might use stories, metaphor, imagery, objects, writing or art to help make sense of your experience.There is never any expectation to perform or have creative experience. The focus is always on what feels most helpful for you.

Is this the same as birth trauma therapy or a birth debrief?

No.The Birth is a therapeutic space centred on storytelling, reflection and meaning-making.It is not a medical birth debrief, birth preparation or parenting advice. While people with traumatic birth experiences are very welcome, you do not need to identify your birth as traumatic to benefit from exploring your story.

Is The Birth inclusive?

The Birth is open to anyone who has given birth and would like space to explore, reflect on and make sense of their experience.My practice is LGBTQ+ affirming, and I warmly welcome women, trans and non-binary people. I want The Birth to feel like a safe and accessible space where you can bring your whole story.If you have any accessibility needs or questions about taking part, please get in touch. We can talk through what would help you feel comfortable, including meeting online or exploring options for an accessible in-person space where possible.

Why only three sessions?

The Birth was intentionally designed as a complete, focused therapeutic experience. Not everyone wants or is able to commit to ongoing therapy, yet many people carry a birth story that deserves time and attention. Three sessions offer enough space to explore your story with care, while remaining contained, accessible and purposeful. If, together, we feel further therapy would be helpful, we can discuss that afterwards.

Can I bring my baby?

As The Birth is a therapeutic space, sessions are designed to give you the opportunity to focus on your own experience.If arranging childcare feels difficult, please get in touch before booking and we can talk together about what might be possible.

Question 10

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions are available online or in person in Hove. I generally work from 'Hove engineerium' next to Hove park. There is free parking nearby and on site. Each session lasts 90 minutes

How much does it cost?

The Birth is offered as a three-session programme.Autumn introductory offer: £225 for all three sessions.The usual fee is £100-£150 per 90-minute session.
